Medieval Blacksmith
For my final Major Project, I wanted to show what an authentic Medieval Blacksmith’s workshop looks like so that it can be used as part of a period film/TV set. I have chosen this particular theme because of my fondness for the ‘Lord of the Rings’ film trilogy. Furthermore, it is one of the features of historical genres. By building my set, rather than using CGI, it gives actors the chance to interact with a physical set and therefore add to its realism.
I have enjoyed working on all areas of this module, from the design work to my ‘Final Major’ build. Some elements of the set, such as the bellows and forge not only look realistic but have special effects (lights, sounds and smoke) to create the illusion of a working furnace.
Whilst building my set, I offered a costume student the opportunity to pose her 'Lord of the Rings' themed costume in my set.
In addition to her cosplay, I offered to make her 'The Witch King of Angmars' flail from 'The Return of the King'.
The materials used to create the flail comprises of the following materials:
-
Double corrugated cardboard;
-
Multi-purpose filler;
-
Wooden broom handle;
-
Mountboard;
-
Satin spray-paint;
-
Primer
After creating dozens of perspective drawing ideas for my set, I narrowed it down to my final design with four different points of view. Furthermore, I also included two opposing isometric drawings.
Based on my sketched designs, I made a rough 'Google Sketchup' model. This way, I could make small alterations, in case some of the dimensions needed changing. I made sure to take note of the final measurements as I went along.
